AWAAHS (Animal Welfare and Anti Harassment Society) a Nashik based NGO has rescued 86 cows so far and treated them at their animal shelter. Founder of the NGO, Gaurav Kshatriya has been an animal lover since his childhood. The 30-year-old businessman who deals in cattle food started the NGO at Patherdi three years back.
300 volunteers help him with the cause, 20 of whom work day and night to rescue injured cows and buffaloes. All the members of the group are between the age of 18-25 and use their own pocket money to help provide medical attention to the injured animals. Kshatriya arranges veterinarian doctors for the treatment of these animals.
His passion for animals has irked his family, especially his wife who walked away from their marriage. “The cows are my family. My own family left me for this reason. People say that 33 core gods reside in cow’s stomach. I believe that and hence I treat them as my family,” an emptional Kshatriya added.

“Cows here mainly suffer from a disease called Interdigital candidiasis in which muscles are formed between the two digits of the animal. As a result of this they are not able to walk properly. This is very common among the cattle in Nashik and we want to eradicate it as it spreads from one animal to another,” Kshatriya says. The NGO treats the cows and then sends them to the cowshed once they are healed.
Kshatriya says that while there are a lot of people who work for small animals, big ones like the cows and buffaloes are generally ignored. “I have dedicated my life to these animals and I spend most of my income on their medicine,” he adds.
AWAAHS also has a fulltime helper who takes care of the animals apart from the volunteers.
